An introduction to the blue urban commons in Stockholm
Our researcher Anja M. Rieser presented the project “Blue Urban Commons” to participants of the SOS Climate Waterfront workshop. The EU initiative SOS Climate Waterfront is an interdisciplinary project that aims to explore waterfronts in Europe that are facing climate change and collects different disciplines to create new strategies for sustainable solutions for infrastructure and urban planning (read more here). The four-week workshop hosted by KTH and Intercult aimed to exchange experiences across Europe about new solutions and strategies that can reverse the vulnerability of urban waterfronts, while drawing on the history of the urban landscape, social sciences, arts, and humanities.
Anja's presentation aimed to show the importance of taking into consideration Stockholm's urban blue commons, as the participants were designing solutions for the waterfronts at the study sites Lövholmen, Frihamnen, and Värtahamnen in Stockholm. The presentation covered how specifically fishing is part of the many activities people do on the waterfronts in Stockholm and highlighted the life of the fish below the surface and how they are impacted by new constructions. Fishing as everyday moral practice
Our researchers Wijnand Boonstra and Hanna Wernersson presented the findings of their study of urban fishing practices in Stockholm at the 11th MARE People and the Sea Conference. They demonstrate that the capital of Sweden hosts a myriad of fishing practices; the fisher(wo)men of Stockholm use different methods and gear, target different species, and some keep the catch while others release it. These practices reflect different and sometimes conflicting moralities—ideas of the rights and responsibilities fishers hold toward the fish. See abstract and presentation here.

Fishing in the city for food
Please join Sofie Joosse (researcher at SLU) on an urban fishing trip. From a slightly uncomfortable fishing chair, and equipped with rod you will get acquainted with the often forgotten but worldwide practice of fishing for food in the city. You will together with Sofie meet a variety of fish, perhaps discuss urban fish stocks, urban pollution and contaminated fish, maybe even animal welfare and ethics, and how urban fishing can be a nice case to rethink our relationship with food, city and sustainability.
